Application of radar level gauge in different media

In the process of petrochemical production, different types of storage tanks are often seen. According to the characteristics of storage products, different types of radar level gauges should be used to measure different products.

(一) Measurement of light oil

Light oil mainly refers to gasoline, naphtha and diesel oil with volatile properties.  Low frequency and high frequency radar level gauges are mainly used in light oil.  However, the use of low frequency radar level gauge has a disadvantage, that is, the microwave signal is not strong enough, may produce echo is too weak.  The solution was to install metal waveguides with no obvious seams and a smooth inner wall.  The hf radar level meter does not need to install the wave guide tube, which costs a lot to install, and if the wave guide tube is long, it will affect the measurement result, so the HF radar level meter is more economical than the low-frequency radar level meter.

(二) Measurement of asphalt

Bitumen must be kept liquid at high temperatures, but higher temperatures can produce water vapor.  The viscosity of asphalt liquid state is large, easy to occur hanging phenomenon.  When asphalt is above 100℃, antennas made of PTFE are usually used.  Horn antenna can effectively reduce the impact of hanging material, but the steam generated under high temperature asphalt will become condensed water, rod antenna is less affected by condensed water than horn antenna, its microwave effective range is wider than horn antenna.  It is advisable to use the horn's intelligent radar level gauge for the asphalt with more hanging material in the tank wall.  Asphalt temperature is high, more condensed water, suitable for the use of PTFE rod antenna.

(三) Measurement of liquefied gas

Both LIQUEFIED natural gas (LNG) and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) are liquefied gases, most of which are propane, butane and other substances.  The dielectric constant of liquefied gas is relatively low, the storage environment is high pressure and low temperature environment, and the explosion-proof standard is high, and the spherical tank is generally used for storage.  Hf radar can transmit and receive microwave well for medium with low dielectric constant, so it can measure liquid level distance, which is the main method for measuring liquefied gas.

(四) Measurement of corrosive media

Corrosive media usually have not low dielectric constant, will volatilize different gases and have different degrees of corrosion to the radar antenna, most of the corrosive media volatilized gases can also penetrate into the instrument or signal transmission receiver over time.  Different radar antennas are used for different corrosive media.  Normal temperature water, salt water, sea water can use PP, PTFE, 316S, PVDF four types of antenna;  Sulfuric acid (except high temperature), hydrochloric acid can use PTFE, PVDF two types of antenna;  Caustic soda, phosphoric acid can use PP, PTFE, PVDF three types of antenna.  Nitric acid can not be used for ultrasonic measurement, because nitric acid volatilized gas can absorb ultrasonic;  Liquid nitrogen, because of its strong permeability, uses an integrated gasket airtight design.  In addition, water vapor and foam can be generated in tanks with corrosive media, making rod antennas ideal.
